Program Notes:
This Isn’t Going to Work was written for my graduate brass trio at Washington State University, consisting of Matthew Glover, trumpet; Mark Henderson, horn; and me on bass trombone. It is presented as a series of characteristic miniatures exploring the various iterations of a particular motif. The third movement is especially interesting, as the base of it is written in palindrome, both sectionally and over the course of the movement, with the individual parts experiencing interruptions of ‘MIDI panic.’ I must admit, I have not written a palindromic work since.
