Polar Night (bass trombone and piano)

from $10.00

Commissioned from Allison McIntosh as part of the Bone Structure project, intended to expand the repertoire accessible to developing trombonists. Appropriate for early undergraduate bass trombonists (or whoever wants to perform it!)

Bass trombone and piano

Duration: c. 6’30”

Program Note:
In 1898, Adrien de Gerlache and his international crew of explorers sailed the Belgica into the Antarctic seas. They became trapped amidst the icy continent and were forced to spend the winter on Antarctica, where they endured three months of total darkness. Their expedition was the first to experience this long polar night at the bottom of the world, and their sanity and health suffered for it. In Polar Night, the bass trombone leads an expedition of discovery, full of adventure and promise. When the darkness falls, things become still and uncertain - perhaps even a little mad. By the end of the journey, the main theme of the voyage returns but is forever tainted by the Antarctic darkness.
