Program Notes:

Hikin’ with ‘Squatch was commissioned by Dr. Sarah Miller for the Crimson Brass Trio. In our initial discussions, the subject of exploring the Pacific Northwest came up. This led to a depiction of an encounter with one of the region’s most famous cryptids: Sasquatch. More specifically, Hikin’ with ‘Squatch is an impression of the scenic nature in places like the Olympic National Forest, until the aforementioned cryptid makes their presence known. This region is where I’ve done a fair amount of backpacking myself, on the Pacific Crest Trail. Unfortunately, this never led to an encounter with our furry, blurry friend. The piece is broken up into a series of events: Sunrise, Sasquatch!, Hike?, Hike!, Where you goin’ ‘Squatch?, and Sunset.
