PJ Kelley is a bass trombonist, composer, engraver, and publisher based in the Lawrence, KS area. He received a DMA in trombone performance from the University of Kansas, a MA in music composition from Washington State University, where he also earned his BM in music composition. He has performed with the Washington Idaho Symphony and the Topeka Symphony. He appears as a bass trombonist on Greg Yasinitsky’s “Yazz Band” and the KU Wind Ensemble’s “Freedom From Fear: Music for Wind Band,” and as a composer on the In Motus Tuba Quartet’s “Shadows: The Music of Octubaween,” and Drei Bones’ “Of Hammered Gold.”
Since 2020, PJ has worked as a recording engineer with Post Haus Acoustic (The Post Haus), most recently appearing on Daniel Velasco’s Flauta Andina album, and previously on Driving While Black. Upcoming projects include several albums featuring the University of Kansas faculty, as well as new music ensembles like New Morse Code. Outside of recording, PJ is starting a commissioning project to create more new works for student bass (and tenor) trombonists by living composers, tentatively titled Bone Structure. When not pursuing one of the many aforementioned endeavors, PJ likes to build his LEGO Star Wars collection.
